Bronze Bells by Toshiko Takaezu
Bell Tolls of Toshiko Takaezu April 30th is the much anticipated date for the showing of Toshiko Takaezu¹s bronze bells. The Gateway Bell in the dunes will be joined by five more outstanding bells. Born in Hawaii in 1922, Toshiko Takaezu is a master ceramicist who helped transform the field into a major artistic medium. Known for creating clay vessels that mysteriously rattle when shaken, she began making bronze bells in the 1980¹s to explore sound as a component of sculpture. Research on Japanese bells led her to enhance the sound quality by thickening the instrument¹s rim and top. Each bell is placed within a simple support evoking a Shinto shrine. ³I started making my ceramic pieces with sound and wanted to have a larger, more powerful sound in my work. One of the reasons that I love these bells is that sometimes I hear the church bells from nearby and I run out of my studio and hit my bells to play a symphony with them. For me the sounds of the bell are a most peaceful and calming experience², says Toshiko Takaezu. April 30th, 2pm Reception for the artist at 4pm We would like to thank Charles Cowles, Toshiko Takaezu, John Mosler and John Cioffi for making this exhibition possible.
