Yamada, Shinman (b. 1944)
SHINMAN YAMADA, born 1944 in Naha City Okinawa, learned painting and sculpture from his father, renowned artist, Shinzan Yamada. From 1964, he apprenticed with Eisho Kobashigawa in Naha Tsuboya and later studied glaze techniques at the Tochigi Pottery Institute. The Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Tokyo awarded prizes to Yamada in 1984 and 1986. He was selected to participate in the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition and in Thoughts on Contemporary Vessels “Utsuwa” at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. He has held solo exhibitions at Parchman Stremmel Galleries in San Antonio, Texas and at Capeluto Arts in New York City. He creates a great variety of pieces with vigorous brushwork and distinctive overglaze techniques.
