The Sonic Garden Party
LongHouse Reserve’s Junior Council hosts their 2016 Summer Benefit on August 20, 5-8pm. The Sonic Garden Party is an exploration of sound and community set in the gardens of LongHouse Reserve. 300 attendees will gather for live music curated by National Sawdust, a silent auction of sonic sculptures by local artists, complimentary drinks, food for purchase from a food truck, and an interactive drum circle finale. The evening will be a dynamic and immersive performance of sound, sights, architectural space, and music.
Sound Artist and TED Fellow Bora Yoon will create a site-specific electroacoustic musical soundscape, constructed live using voice, viola, Tibetan singing bowls, metronomes, cellphones, synth, phonographs, chime sticks, and various sonic sundries.
Musician Colin Self will perform a series of vocal and electronic compositions and narratives assembled specifically for the transition of dusk into night. Disguised in nature, Colin will emerge over the course of a half hour, weaving through the trees, finishing in a space of illuminated intimacy.
American sculptor Harry Bertoia’s “Sonambient” sound installation will be on display in the Buckminster Fuller “Fly Eye Dome”. Bertoia dedicated the last twenty years of his life to his Sonambient work, creating long-form, improvised pieces of music utilizing pure acoustic tones evoked from his sound sculptures. Archivist John Brien will create an immersive, 4-channel audio installation, utilizing previously unheard samples of Bertoia's private recordings.
The benefit event includes a silent auction of hand-crafted interactive sonic sculptures by local artists Scott Bluedorn, Fitzhugh Karol, Nick Martin and Nico Yektai.
